Day 1 Reflections by Soe Yan Naung @ Norman

My Key Learning Points From....

1.) Importance of Water - Dirty and Clean

I found out from this session that the water industry has been going on since long ago and still has not ended yet but is expanding. I also learned that there are many problems with water that has not been solved yet and that is why the industry still exists. Water is also affected by the economy as it takes up a lot of energy to obtain clean water and money is needed for the energy. The world still have many people who are not able to obtain clean water and they are the ones who needs the business to help them most.

2.) Revolution of Microelectronics Technology

I have learned that this revolution is causing the transformation of our economy as it grows. It helps the economy by adding value to items. The supply chain for it is now also moving to Asia and it will become the central focus of it in the near future. A lot of equipment today also depends on microchips to work as they are like the brain of the equipment. This field decreases the size of items but also improve on them at the same time.

3.) Biomedical Engineering & Technology

I have discovered that there are three main branches in the field which are Nano-technology, Bio-technology and Defense-technology. Nano-tech deals with small items that are really too small for the human eye to see and can do many things like clean water, make things like braces look almost invisible, make things stronger and lighter and also store a lot of information in a small space. Shark’s teeth are also nano-technology that has been created by nature long ago. Bio-technology can help the blind see, unclot blood vessels without cutting and even help us to communicate. Nano-material coatings can also allow things to travel at super sonic speeds without getting destroyed. Nano-material can also be used to make stronger material that are bullet proof and even more.

4.) IT for Animation by Prof Seah Hock Soon

I have found out that there are three types of animation and they are stop motion, 2D Animation and 3D Animation. Animation is an optical illusion of motion and can be drawn by artist or generated. Story-telling is important in an animation. 2D Animation follows a Production Pipeline which causes it to be more expensive than a 3D Animation. Maths such as Geometric modeling, Calculus and Laws of Physics are also used in an animation.

5.)Disappearing Glaciers, rising sea levels, and why gravity is even more important than you think

I have discovered that there is a job called Geodesist where people measure the shape and size of the earth, its gravity field and things that have changed over time. They also use space based techniques to do their research in great detail. Sea levels also do not rise the same every where, it is different and this is because of “self-attracting and loading” from melting glaciers.

Deepest Impression

The plenary session that leaves the deepest impression on me is the last one on “Disappearing Glaciers, rising sea levels, and why gravity is even more important than you think”.

What I like about it is that it is something very new that I just found out and would not have known that it existed in the whole world even.
